Trip Journal:
With these kids not real used to riding we had planned a shorter day for our second day of riding...only 30 miles. We also decided to take a detour for a bit and enjoy the smooth pavement of the Western Maryland Rail Trail, giving our legs...and butts...a bit of a break. While some of the kids wanted to be purists and stay on the Tow Path (part of me was in agreement...but it was also on my recommendation that we hit the paved road) everyone enoyed it and it was a beautiful ride. Our reward was some ice cream when we reached Hancock.

Once again we encountered a little obstacle as we left Hancock. One of the things we have been trying to hammer into these young me is to leave plenty of space beteen you and the bikes around you. Well...guess what? They didn't listen and sure enough two young men got tangled and went down. Other than some skinned knees...and maybe some bruised egos...everyone was okay. Funny thing is...after that everyone had good spacing! The only other "incident" was the live snake on the trail...I HATE snakes!

Once we got back on the C&O we were pleasantly surprised that we only had about 4 or 5 miles to ride to our campsite. Once again, after eating lunc we set up our tents and then hit the river!

Once we were out of the river and had changed back into our clothes, we had a rather severe, but brief, thunderstorm. Fortunately, it was brief as we discovered several of the kid's tents leaked. Hopefully the rain is over...otherwise it will be a long night.

We managed our food and water much better today. Now I just hope I was right when I told them their butts should feel better tomorrow!
